What is a Hospitalist?

A hospitalist is a medical doctor who specializes in the care of patients during their hospital stay. Most hospitalists are trained in internal medicine, though some may have backgrounds in family medicine or other specialties.

Hospitalists are responsible for managing and coordinating all aspects of a patient’s care while they are admitted. This includes conducting medical evaluations, overseeing treatment plans, collaborating with specialists, and ensuring continuity of care from admission through discharge. They often serve as the central point of communication between the patient, family members, and the broader care team.

By focusing exclusively on inpatient care, hospitalists help improve the quality, efficiency, and safety of care provided in the hospital setting.
